Fall Fruit Superstars

This fall treat yourself to the sweet signature flavors of the season. In terms of both nutrition and flavor, my top three fall fruit picks are pomegranates, satsuma tangerines, and persimmons. All three contain a wealth of antioxidants known to reduce inflammation and support longevity and vitality. Each of these fruits are delicious in a morning fruit bowl, pack easily as a snack and present beautifully on salads.

Pomegranate seeds are rich in vitamin C, B5, and cancer fighting phenols, supporting heart, prostate, and intestinal health. Extracting these tiny explosions of flavor from their outer skin is a bit of work, but it’s a labor of love and well worth the effort. Introduce your kids to pomegranates by getting them to help with the seeding. They will inevitably snack on these healthy treats as they work. 

Satsuma tangerines are an excellent source of vitamin C, powerful flavonoids, and potassium, which boost the immune system, improve skin and hair health, and help regulate blood pressure. These juicy tangerines are easy to peal, seedless, and deliver more flavor than most other citrus fruits. They also pack perfectly in a purse or lunchbox. 

Persimmons are rich in potassium, manganese, and vitamin A, supporting muscle function, bone health, blood sugar regulation, and vision. Their high fiber content improves digestive health and detoxification. You will generally find two varieties of persimmons, fuyu and haichiya. Fuyu persimmons are apple shaped with a flat bottom, and can be eaten firm. Haichiya persimmons are heart shape with a pointed bottom and must be very soft before they are ready to eat. My preference is the Fuyu variety.

The natural sweetness and dynamic flavors of these seasonal wonders will leave you feeling satisfied, energized, and healthy. Indulge more in the treats provided by nature, while passing on processed sugary desserts, and you will find yourself on the winning end of the great body weight balancing act.
